This image shows the view from the railway bridge across the tracks at Dunedin Railway Station. The image was taken in January 2008, when the bridge was 104 year old. The bridge is a good place to appreciate the 1km long station platform, the longest in New Zealand, and one of the tourist attractions of Dunedin. From here the daily Taieri Gorge Railway tours depart.
Shortly afterwards the bridge was destroyed in a freak accident on Tuesday 12 February 2008, making the panorama an historic picture. In the accident, large metal side doors of some container carriages fell open as the train passed the bridge, ripping it apart. Plans for a reconstruction of the bridge are underway.
