The University of Otago is the oldest university in New Zealand. The university was founded in 1869 under the support of Thomas Burns and James Macandrew, two of the founders of Dunedin. Based in Otago, the University of Otago now has campuses in both Auckland and Wellington and a medical school in Christchurch. A marine laboratory is found in Portabello on the Otago Peninsula.
