This picture was taken next to Highway 1 in the Otago region of South Island, New Zealand between the Waikouaiti and Merton. Having descended from Tumai to Waikouaiti through a valley, H1 then passes over a large, flat plain before reaching Merton and then continuing on through hills to Dunedin. The scenery here is quite spectacular, with the hills rising in the background.

Waikouaiti is a small village that has a golf course. There are some Bed and Breakfast or farmstays in the region for visitors. Nearby outdoor attractions include Shag Point and the Moeraki Boulders to the north, and the Otago Peninsula to the south.

Waikouaiti is on Highway 1 about 40km north of Dunedin.
