Tree Avenue on way to Lovers Leap - PHOTOGRAPHER COMMENT
The track along Sandymount Road passes through a thicket of trees. They grow quite densely and it reminded me of Mirkwood in the Hobbit. The panorama shows the track and wood with sunlight streaming through the branches.
Tree Avenue on way to Lovers Leap - FURTHER INFORMATION
Tree Avenue on way to Lovers Leap - Otago Peninsula visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Tree Avenue on way to Lovers Leap' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from Otago.
Hikers walking to the Chasm and Lovers Leap must park on Sandymount Road, near to the woods shown in this image. From there a track proceeds through the woods onto open fields. The track then splits with the left hand leading off to the Chasm. The right track leads to Lovers Leap and then around Sandymount to Sandfly Bay. Parts of the track over open ground offer dramatic panoramic views of the Otago Peninsula. Walkers are advised that the weather conditions here can change rapidly and without warning, with fog closing in over the coastline. The paths here can be very muddy and slippery when wet. The drop from the top of the cliffs to the sea is about 200m.
TRAVEL DIRECTIONS AND GETTING THERE
From Dunedin the two main routes to the peninsula are clearly marked. For Sandymount take the Highcliff Road and then Sandymount Road to parking near the end.
