Stadium of Domitian

Stadium of Domitian

This panorama was taken about half way along the length of the Stadium, close the Domus Augustana on the Palatine Hill, . The ruins of the Palace of Domitian are on the far side of the Stadium.

The Stadium set into the Palatine Hill was built at the same time as the Palace of Domitian. It is 160m long and well below the ground level. The architecture is similar to that of the Circus Maximus and other hippodromes, though it is doubtful that the Stadium was long enough for chariot racing.

Debate over the actual use of the Stadium on the Palatine hill still continues. Given that the small size seems to exclude chariot racing as a function, other suggestions have included foot racing, field sports or as a garden. Whatever the function, the Stadium was for the private use of the Emperor.

Scattered around the Stadium are the remains of granite columns, a marble altar and various figures of gods. Next to the Stadium is the Palace of Domitian and the Domus Augustana.

Entrance to the Palatine Hill is ticketed, and the entrance gate is near to the Arch of Titus in the Roman Forum. Tickets cover entrance to both the Palatine Hill ruins and the Colosseum, and may be brought at either location. The queue for tickets at the Palatine Hill ticket office is much shorter than that at the Colosseum.
