The Timaru Tourist Information Centre provides all the information needed to get the most out of a holiday in Timaru and the surrounding parts of Canterbury in New Zealand. Get information about the hotels, Bed & Breakfast, farm stays and campsites. Find out about local sights and attractions such as the carnival at Caroline Bay, the Timaru Botanic Park and Trevor Griffiths Rose Garden. The tourist information centre also has information about riding, fishing and walking in the region.
The Tourist Information Centre used to be the old Service Landing Building in Timaru. Outside the front is a statue of Captain Henry Cain, an important figure in local history who settled in Timaru in 1857. Henry Cain went to sea at the age of thirteen becoming a wealthy trader with interests and property in California and Melbourne. He arrived in New Zealand in 1851 aboard the schooner Pauline, which he owned, settling in Timaru in 1857. In 1859 he opened the first landing service, owned stores in Cain's Terrace, became the town mayor and harbour pilot. 1886 he was murdered by poison and buried in the Timaru Cemetery.
