Timaru Railway Station - FURTHER INFORMATION
Timaru Railway Station - Timaru visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Timaru Railway Station' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from Canterbury.
Timaru lies on the line linking Christchurch in Canterbury with Dunedin in Otago on South Island of New Zealand. The railway station in Timaru is right next to the Tourist Information Centre. The first steam train arrived in Timaru in 1887, as the town and harbour were growing. Today the station is almost entirely used for freight, except for the occasional 'special' service when old steam locomotives take tourists for rides along the coastal lines. The last Christchurch-Dunedin-Invercargill train service, the daily 'Southerner' over the South island Main Trunk Line, was withdrawn in 2004. Today, anyone wishing to travel to these destinations must use a bus.
