Tunnel Beach from Boulder on Beach - PHOTOGRAPHER COMMENT
This panorama was taken perched on top of a massive boulder resting on Tunnel Beach. It gives a better view of the layout of the beach and surrounding cliffs than an image from the sand below. It was fun watching the waves wash up onto the sand - until I realized that the tide was coming in and soon they would not wash back out again. Time to retreat back up the tunnel.
Tunnel Beach from Boulder on Beach - FURTHER INFORMATION
Tunnel Beach from Boulder on Beach - Dunedin visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Tunnel Beach from Boulder on Beach' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from Otago.
Tunnel Beach is some 7km from the center of Dunedin and about half way between St Clair Park and Blackead. The coastline here is very rugged and dramatic with steep cliffs cut into by the waves. At places there are sea arches and stacks standing off shore. Tunnel Beach is so named after a tunnel cut into the rock leading down to the beach itself from a headland.
TRAVEL DIRECTIONS AND GETTING THERE
From Dunedin follow signs for St Clair Park on Middleton Road. This becomes Blackhead Road. About 2.5km past St Clair Park is Tunnel Beach road, an unsealed track. Follow this to the end and park. Walk down the path to Tunnel Beach from here. A round trip takes about an hour.
