This panorama was taken part way up the footpath that leads down to Tunnel Beach. It passes through fields as it descends down steep hills. These hills terminate abruptly at sheer cliffs that drop away into the Pacific Ocean.

The walk down to Tunnel Beach takes about an hour round trip. Here the coastline of New Zealand is pounded by the Pacific Ocean and carved into dramatic shapes. This image shows the Tunnel Beach headland, and the sea arch that has been created over time. From the top of this headland is the stepped tunnel carved during the 1870's to provide the family of John Cargill private access to the beach. Today the beach is open to the public, and best visited at low tide.

From Dunedin follow signs for St Clair Park on Middleton Road. This becomes Blackhead Road. About 2.5km past St Clair Park is Tunnel Beach road, an unsealed track. Follow this to the end and park. Walk from here.
