Blackhead Quarry - FURTHER INFORMATION
Blackhead Quarry - Dunedin visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Blackhead Quarry' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from Otago.
Blackhead is a short distance south of Dunedin in Otago on the South Island of New Zealand. The head is the site of Blackhead Quarry, which has removed and flattened the top of the 10 million year old volcanic cone. The basalt rock here contains calcium and sodium rich zeolites, calcite and pyrite.
Blackhead Beach next to the quarry is a popular spot for surfing, and most of the cars seen in this picture belong to surfers on the beach. It is not uncommon to pass cyclists on the road carrying boards on their bikes near here.
TRAVEL DIRECTIONS AND GETTING THERE
From Dunedin follow signs for St Clair Park on Middleton Road. This becomes Blackhead Road, which continues to Blackhead. On the way the road passes a turnoff for Tunnel Beach. Blackhead is about 9km from the center of Dunedin.
