Devil's Punchbowl Falls are the largest waterfall in the Arthur's Pass area. It is 131m high, though the flow rate of water over the falls varies greatly with different weather conditions and seasons. The walk up from Arthur's Pass village crosses over a tributary to the Bealey River on a narrow footbridge. From there the path ascends through a series of switchbacks to a viewing platform at Devil's Punchbowl Falls. Waters from Bealey River flow east into the Waimakariri River which terminates at the Pacific Ocean at Kairaki Beach a short distance north of Christchurch.
