Beaumont Bridge over Clutha River - PHOTOGRAPHER COMMENT
Panorama showing the road bridge at Beaumont over the Clutha River. There is a picnic spot by the southern end of the bridge, and it was a great place for lunch on the drive from Dunedin to Wanaka. The river looked beautiful and was very relaxing to watch.

The Clutha River is the second longest river in New Zealand. At Beaumont there is a road bridge across the river. A rail service used to also run here, but has long been closed. The water levels are controlled upstream by the Roxburgh Dam and can rise very rapidly if the dam releases a lot of water. A short distance downstream is the only Clutha River Ferry at Tuapeka Mouth. This is the only punt ferry in the Southern Hemisphere and has been running for over 100 years.
