Central Otago covers the central part of the Otago region of New Zealand. This is mountain country, and the main towns include Queenstown, Cromwell and Wanaka. The region was first settled by Europeans in the 1860's during a gold rush which saw the establishment of little settlements like Albert Town, Alexandra, Arrowtown, Bannockburn, Clyde, Cromwell, Hawea, Millers Flat, Naseby, Oturehua, Ranfurly, Roxburgh, St. Bathans, and Wedderburn.
