The Clyde Dam across Clutha River in Central Otago is the third largest hydroelectric dam in New Zealand. It is a short distance upriver from Alexandra. The construction of the dam caused much controversy as it flooded Cromwell Gorge and many orchards upstream of Cromwell. The dam is 100m high and 490m long. It has a capacity of four 120 MW francis turbine. Flooding behind the dam created Lake Dunstan.
