Badajoz is the name of both a city and province within Extremadura in spain. As a province, Badajoz is bordered by Cáceres, Toledo, Ciudad Real, Córdoba, Sevilla, and Huelva, and Portugal. Much of the terrain of Badajoz is undulating hills and plains. The largest river in the province, the Guadiana, flows west through the northern region. The region contains some reservoirs, such as the Embalse de Sierra Brava which have become important bird migration sites.
Badajoz (Badajos) city lies on the left bank of the Guadiana close to the Portuguese border and on the Madrid-Lisbon railway. Badajoz is first mentioned in Moorish literature around 875AD and became the capital of the Moorish Emirate of Badajoz in 1022. Much of the citie's architecture reelects centuries of conflict, and the cathedral looks more like a castle than a church.
