Lake Dunstan is the result of flooding after the construction of the Clyde Dam across Clutha River in the late 1990's. This new lake in Central Otago caused parts of Cromwell to be moved and rebuilt. The lake has become popular for various water sports, water skiing and angling. Water from the lake is also used for local agriculture.
Clyde Dam is the third largest hydroelectric dam in New Zealand, and blocks Clutha River a short distance upriver from Alexandra.
