Lawrence is a small town in ccr3257,South Otago on the South Island of New Zealand. The town was originally called Tuapeka, which was changed to Lawrence after a British war hero. Lawrence was the first gold rush town in New Zealand, and at it's height in the 1860's supported about 11,000 people, much more than lived in Dunedin at the time.
Today the town has shrunk to some 500 individuals, and is promoted as one of the gateways to Central Otago. There are numerous attractions reminiscent of the gold rush era. These include the Goldfields Museum and Chinese Camp. Black Horse Brewery is another popular tourist attraction. There are a few Bed & Breakfast places and some campsites for those wishing to stay in the area.
