Goldfields Museum at Lawrence - Further Information

The Tuapeka Goldfields Museum shows some of the history and artifacts from this time, as well as explaining some of the prospecting and mining methods used. It is housed in the Visitor Information Centre on the high street. Lawrence became established as the first gold rush town in Otago on the South Island of New Zealand during the 1860's when gold was first discovered in Gabriel's Gully nearby. The town swelled to accommodate over 11,000 people, more than the population of Dunedin at the time. There was a large Chinese population here at that time, and a Chinese Camp can still be found nearby.
