Pazin is a very old town and administrative center of Istra in Croatia. It is a very old town, first mentioned in 983. The town is best know for the Castle of Pazin (Kaštel), around which it grew after the castle was built in the 15th and 16th century. Since the end of WWII the Kaštel has been used as a museum.
Another major landmark is Pazin's Pit (Pazinska jama), which is the best example of karst hydrography and morphology in Istria. The Pazinčica River flows into the cave through a narrow gorge. The cave system was first explored between 1893-1896 by French caver E. A. Martel and the subterranean waters expert W. Putick.
