Part of Lake Dunstan floods Cromwell Gorge in Central Otago, which runs south from Cromwell for about 20km to the Clyde Dam. Along the way there are several picnic and rest spots which are also used to launch boats onto the lake. Lake Dunstan has become popular for fishing and other water sports. At most points in Cromwell Gorge it is about 400m wide. Lake Dunstan is fed by the Clutha River.
Other popular, natural, lakes in the region are Lake Wanaka and Lake Hawea further north by Wanaka. To the west is Lake Wakatipu by Queenstown.
