Roxburgh Dam - FURTHER INFORMATION
Central Otago virtual tour with a 360° panorama of 'Roxburgh Dam' linked to a Google map. A Central Otago attractions travel guide.
Roxburgh Dam is about 5km north of Roxburgh and 32km south of Alexandra in Central Otago on the South Island of New Zealand. This is one of two hydroelectric dams on the Clutha River, the other being Clyde Dam some 44km upstream. Behind Roxburgh Dam the Roxburgh Valley has flooded to form Roxburgh Lake. Water released by these dams can rapidly affect river levels further downstream, and at Beaumont there are signs warning people of this fact.
Roxburgh Dam Was built between 1949 and 1958. Today the dam's eight-unit power station has a capacity of 320 megawatts and is operated by Contact Energy.
