Roxburgh Valley is a narrow glacial valley in Central Otago. The Clutha River flows through it and at this point is blocked by the Roxburgh Hydroelectric Dam. Water behind the dam floods the valley to form Lake Roxburgh which stretches some 30km upriver to Alexandra, a short distance south of Clyde Dam and Lake Dunstan.
Roxburgh Dam is the southernmost dam along the Clutha River. Both of these lakes have become recreational and are used for various water sports including jet skiing, water skiing and fishing. There are numerous boat launching spots along both lakes.
