The Clutha River flows through Central Otago in New Zealand from . The waters enter Lake Dunstan, created by the Clyde Dam in . From here the Clutha flows past Alexandra into Roxburgh Valley, which is now flooded by the Roxburgh Hydroelectric Dam forming Lake Roxburgh. South of the Roxburgh Dam the Clutha River continues through Otago past various little settlements like Beaumont and the river ferry at Tuapeka Mouth on the way to the sea.
The river and it's lakes are used for tourism, holidays and water activities. Care must be taken below the dams as water released by them can quickly affect the river levels, causing them to rise and fall suddenly without warning. There are numerous boat launch sites along the edges.
This whole area was intensively explored by Europeans around the 1860's after gold was found in the area. The resulting gold rush did not last long as the gold quickly ran out.
