Queenstown is a popular resort town in the southwest of Otago in New Zealand. The town is synonymous with adventure sports all year round with excellent access to The Remarkables mountains. An all year round resort with walking, hiking, climbing, and mountain sports during the summer months, and skiing in the winter. Queestown is set on the edges of Lake Wakatipu which provides water sports and fishing. As a result, people flock to Queenstown both from throughout New Zealand and also from Australia. The town is full of hotels, hostels, bed and breakfast, chalets and other holiday accommodation to suit all needs and all budgets.
Queenstown sells itself as the prime centre for snow sports in New Zealand. On it's doorstep are Cardrona Alpine Resort, Coronet Peak, The Remarkables and Treble Cone which provide skiing for people of all levels in stunning surroundings. Queenstown also has a reputation for cuisine and fine wines. It is in the middle of the wine region and premium quality Pinot Noir wines come from here.
Those looking for walking and trekking are spoilt for choice. The Remarkables are full of hiking trails. Further down Lake Wakatipu is the small settlement of Glenorchy and from here are also trails up to Invincible Gold Mine, Diamond Lake and Paradise.
Queenstown is the center of Queenstown-Lakes District, which covers some 8,705km² and contains 3 massive natural lakes, Lake Wakatipu, Lake Wanaka and Lake Hawea.
TRAVEL DIRECTIONS AND GETTING THERE
Car: Queenstown is about 280km from Dunedin on the 8 and 6 Highways. It is about 65km from Wanaka.
Flight: Queenstown Airport has scheduled flights to Auckland, Christchurch and Sydney year-round and Wellington, Melbourne and Brisbane seasonally.
