Lake Wakatipu is the water playground of Queenstown. This long, finger lake is used for all sorts of water sports in the summer, from water skiing to fishing. The TSS Earnsla, an ancient steam ship based in Queenstown, regularly gives cruises on Lake Wakatipu. Brown Charters also offers lake cruises on a classic 58ft launch Luanda.
Lake Wakatipu lies near the border between Otago and Southland. The lake is shaped like an inverted 'N' and is 80km long, the longest lake in New Zealand. The lake surface is at 310m, but the lake is over 200m deep in places. The lake is fed by the Dart River at the northern end, and drained via Kawarau River from the Frankton Arm at the southern end. The lake is surrounded by amazing mountain ranges like the Remarkables.
