The coastline on the Southern side of Menorca is peppered with small sandy beaches set into coves, or calas. These punctuate rocky headlands that separate the beaches. Sometimes the beaches of the calas are set far back in deep coves which provides a great deal of protection from the open sea. This also provides dramatic borders to the beach.
As can be seen in this picture, taken on a headland between Cala des Talajer and Cala en Turqueta, the terrain can be barren and rocky, shaped and sculpted by the waves. Needles of rock stretch out into the sea to form beachless and rocky coves, as devoid of tourists as they are of plants. On clear days the views here stretch as far as Mallorca.
