Frankton Arm from Queenstown Gardens - PHOTOGRAPHER COMMENT

Panorama showing the Frankton Arm of Lake Wakatipu and The Remarkables from a jetty next to Queenstown Gardens. This picuture was taken on a summer day early in 2008 as a cyclone storm system was approaching from the east ushering clouds over the mountains.

Frankton Arm from Queenstown Gardens - Queenstown visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Frankton Arm from Queenstown Gardens' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from Otago.

The Frankton Arm is a side arm, about 6km long, part way down Lake Wakatipu in the Queenstown-Lakes District or Otago on the South Island of New Zealand. It is named after the town of Frankton which lies at the eastern end of the Frankton Arm, and to the south are The Remarkables. The arm narrows at the mouth with Queenstown Gardens on the northern side and Kelvin Heights Golf Course on the southern side. At the eastern end is the Kawarau River which drains Lake Wakatipu (the Dart River feeds into the northern end of Lake Wakatipu near Glenorchy).

During the summer months the Frankton Arm is popular for water sports, water skiing and swimming. Power boat thrill rides leave regularly from Queenstown and shoot up the Frankton Arm and then up Lower Shotover River.

The Frankton Arm walk is a popular summer walk covering about 5.5km from Queenstown to Frankton. The walk is often combined with a visit to Kawarau Falls Dam and bridge, a failed gold mining venture which now gives access to Kelvin Heights and carries the main highway to Kingston and Lumsden.
