Crown Range Road winds up into the Crown Range Mountains from Cardrona and Wanaka, following the route of the Cardrona River. There are numerous hiking trails into the hills from trailheads beside the road. At Cardrona Hotel is a small display of some of the gold mining history of Cardrona Valley.
The Crown Range route reputed to be one of the most difficult roads, and the highest sealed road, in New Zealand. Once past the Crown Range Pass, the road descends thorugh a series of steep switchbacks to Arrow Junction and then joins Highway 6 to Queenstown. It is an attractive alternative to the Highway 6 route that most people use.
