The Cardrona Valley leads south from Wanaka at the southern end of up into the Crown Range Mountains. The valley road follows the pat of the Cardrona River and then winds up into the Crown Ranges as the Crown Range Road, passing over the Crown Range Pass before descending the other side of the mountain range to Arrow Junction and Queenstown. The small settlement of Cardrona is part way up the valley. Established in during the gold rush in the 19C, mining at Cardrona was not profitable, though some of the remnants of the era can be seen. There is a small display at the old Cardrona Hotel.

Road: Cardrona Valley Road runs south from Wanaka to the Crown Range Pass.
