Butchers Gully Dam - PHOTOGRAPHER COMMENT
Panorama taken from the dam at Butchers Gully. The image was shot late in the afternoon on the drive from Dunedin to Wanaka. This is a narrow, curved dam with a walkway across the top from which you get a great view both down Butchers Gully and over the lake created by the dam.

Butchers Gully Dam lies a short distance south of Alexandra in Central Otago, New Zealand. The dam was built 1935 and 1937 to provide a reservoir for Alexandra, and flooded part of Butchers Gully. The outlet tunnel is 728 metres and passes through solid schist rock. Water from the lake drains into the Clutha River near the northern end of Roxburgh Lake. Butchers Gully Dam Lake is used for recreation and there are numerous walks into the surrounding hills from here. One of these, the Roxburgh Gorge Walk to Doctors Point, takes in several historical gold mining sites including 'Leaky Lodge' and 'Mary Ann's' - both huts used by Chinese miners. The region is now part of the Flat Top Hill Conservation Area.
