The small village of Lake Hawea sits at the southern end of Lake Hawea, deep in the mountains of Central Otago. The village has unprecedented views down the length of this natural glacial lake. Within Lake Hawea are numerous hotels, motels, Bed and Breakfast places for travelers. Most of the ecnomy of the town comes from tourism. In the summer months the lake provides excellent fishing, water sports and tramping. There are numerous trails into the hills.

Lake Hawea is also very close to Lake Wanaka, which lies in the neigbouring valley to the east. The two lakes are separated by a narrow isthmus known as The Neck. Lake Wanaka and Lake Hawea are both thought to be named after local Maori tribes. Both the lakes are part of the Queenstown-Lakes District.
