Lake Hawea is surrounded by various pebble and rocky beaches. In the summer months the lake is used for water sports, fishing and boating. The surrounding mountains are popular for walking and climbing. Lake Hawea is close to Mount Aspiring National Park and the associated winter ski fields. The village here is quieter than Wanaka, situated just to the south, and provides a very restful environment in which to unwind and relax. Lake Hawea is part of the Queenstown-Lakes District.

Car: Lake Hawea township is about 15km north of Wanaka on Highway 6 and 48km south of Makarora.
