The Neck is a narrow isthmus of land, no more than 1000m long, that separates Lake Wanaka from Lake Hawea. These two large natural lakes are the result of glaciation, and are part of the Queenstown-Lakes District. On the western side of Lake Wanaka rise the Mount Aspiring and other mountains of the Harris Mountains within Mount Aspiring National Park with peaks around 2000m.

Lake Wanaka is the fourth largest lake in New Zealand. It is 42km long, 300m deep in places and lies at an altitude of 300m. At the southern end is the town of Wanaka, while at the northern end is Makarora. It is fed by the Makarora River at the north and drains into the Clutha River from the southern end.

Road: From Wanaka take the 6 Highway north up along Lake Hawea, and past The Neck. Wanaka is about 68km north of Queenstown on the 6 Highway.
