Pleasant Flat Recreation Area lies at the bottom of the climb to the Haast Pass on the West Coast of New Zealand. The Haast River originates high in the mountains near the border with Otago. It flows west cascading through steep river gorges and below the Gate of Haast bridge. Suddenly the river reaches 100m above sea level and the valley opens up into a wide open space. This wide valley is lined by Sunset Spur and Ramsay Ridge to the southeast and by Pivot Spur to the northwest. These steep hills rise sharply to heights of 1200m. At the end of Pivot Spur, the Haast River is joined by Landsborough River and the 6 Highway rounds Clarke Bluff before continuing the journey to Haast where it crosses Haast Bridge and continues north up the coastline.
Pleasant Flat Recreation Area has a picnic site, toilets and camping ground. There is a pleasant paved forest walk beside the banks of a tributary to the Haast River.
