Highway 6 North of Haast - PHOTOGRAPHER COMMENT
After driving through the windy and narrow Haast Pass in torrential rain, the road north from Haast along the coast was a dream. Open landscapes with windswept fields and straight, wide roads. This panorama shows some of the windswept trees that line the roads here.
Highway 6 North of Haast - FURTHER INFORMATION
Highway 6 North of Haast - Haast visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Highway 6 North of Haast' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from West Coast.
Just north of Haast, past the Haast Bridge, Highway 6 continues along the coastline of the West Coast of New Zealand. This point is nearly half way between Wanaka in Otago and Fox Glacier. The terrain here is quite flat, open and very windswept. The trees and bushes are all moulded by the wind, and the tree line takes on a layered, sculpted feel.
Highway 6 is one of the longest roads in New Zealand, running over 1,000km from Invercagill at the southern end of South Island to Picton in the north. The most famous part of Highway 6 is probably the stretch between Queenstown in Otago and Greymouth on the West Coast. This section is often included in road trips around New Zealand, and is the only road down the length of the West Coast, where it passes some of the major tourist attractions on South Island.
Along this section lie three great natural lakes of the Queenstown-Lakes District, Lake Wakatipu, Lake Wanaka and Lake Hawea. The road also passes along the side of Lake Dunstan. En route Highway 6 links Queenstown with Cromwell, Wanaka, Lake Hawea Township and Makrora at the northern end of Lake Wanaka.
Highway 6 then takes a very dramatic route through the and over the Gate of Haast before descending to Haast on the west coast. Turning sharply over the Haast Bridge this road travels the up the west coast past Lake Moeraki to Fox Glacier and Franz Josef Glacier, both famous and popular tourist attractions on South Island. The road then continues along the coast to Greymouth and beyond.
