Fox Glacier Carpark - PHOTOGRAPHER COMMENT
This panorama was taken from the car park at the end of the dirt road leading to Fox Glacier. At one time this whole area was covered with ice, but today it is a gravel valley and the Fox River flows down it. However, since 1985 Fox Glacier has been growing again, so this may change.

The car park by Fox Glacier is built on the gravel bed of the valley. From here it is a 30 minute walk along gravel tracks to the end of the glacier itself. The walk up the valley is dominated by the mountains on either side, covered in dense temperate rain forest at low levels. Weather conditions in the valley can change rapidly without notice, and good walking shoes and wet rain gear are recommended. Hikers should keep to the trail and not wander up the valley floor as the river experiences sudden surges and can change course without warning.
