Rain Forest Walk at Fox Glacier - PHOTOGRAPHER COMMENT

Fox Glacier ends in temperate rainforest and it is quite surprising to be walking next to ice one minute and in the forest the next. This panorama was taken form a path on one of the walks at the end of Glacier View Road.

For those interested in hiking and tramping, there are a number of walks around Fox Glacier. Most people park at the Fox Glacier car park at the end of Glacier View Road and take the short walk along Fox Glacier Trail to the tongue of the glacier. Other hikes and tramps locally inlcude:

  • Minnehaha Walk - A 20 minute round trip through the rainforest on the outskirts of Fox Glacier Township.
  • Moraine Walk - This starts on Glacier View Road passing over rocky glacial moraine and into native bush on a 40 minute round circuit.
  • Chalet Lookout Walk - A 1 hour 15 minute loop track starting at the end of Glacier View road, passing through rain forest and over a stream to a beautiful lookout point with a view over Fox Glacier.
  • Mount Fox Track - An 8 hour round trip starting from the parking area on Highway 6 just south of Fox Glacier Township. This tramp pases along steep tracks through alpine grassland giving stunning views of the mountains, coastline and glacier en route.
  • Copland Track - Welcome Flat - A 6 to 8 hour one way tramp to Welcome Flat Hot pools. The trail head is about 20 minutes south of town and connection can be provided through both Intercity and Atomic Shuttles.

In addition, various companies will provide guided tours both up to and on the Fox Glacier. These are often either half day or full day walking tours, accompanied by an expert guide. Unguided tours upon the glacier are not permitted due to the hazardous and continually changing ice conditions.
