The Clearwater River Suspension Bridge crosses the Clearwater River next to car park at the trail head for the path around Lake Matheson. Lake Matheson is a glacial lake formed by water filling a depression created during the retreat of Fox Glacier from the valley. This has become a popular tourist attraction due to beautiful reflections of Aoraki (Mount Cook) and Mount Tasman in the still waters at times. The lake's waters are brown, the result of leeching from the surrounding rain forest. On leaving the lake the waters become clear, and then wind slowly down the wide alluvial plain to the sea just a little south of Gillespies Beach about 10km away.
TRAVEL DIRECTIONS AND GETTING THERE
