Picnic Area at Lake Matheson - FURTHER INFORMATION
Picnic Area at Lake Matheson - Fox Glacier visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Picnic Area at Lake Matheson' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from West Coast.
Lake Matheson lies a little west of Fox Glacier and formed as water filled a depression left by the glacier's retreat. Once a traditional traditional Māori mahinga kai (food gathering place) because of the abundant fish, the lake is now a well known tourist attraction popular for reflections of Aoraki (Mount Cook) and Mount Tasman at times.
Today a clear trail allows visitors to walk round the lake, taking about 1.5 hours to complete. Passing over the Clearwater River suspension bridge, this path allows people to explore the temperate rain forest, dense reed beds and gives access to the famous reflection point on the northern side.
