Lake Brunner - FURTHER INFORMATION
Lake Brunner - Lake Brunner visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Lake Brunner' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from West Coast.
Lake Brunner is a beautiful lake on the West Coast of New Zealand. It covers 40km², one of the largest lakes on South Island outside of the Queenstown-Lakes District. It is fed by numerous stream running down from the mountains, especially on the eastern side, and drains into the Arnold River at the northern end, close to Moana. Lake Brunner township is on the southern end of the lake.
Although close to Greymouth, Lake Brunner does not see as many tourists as other scenic highlights on South Island. This is, in part, because it is not conveniently next to either Highway 6 or Highway 73. However, the lake is increasingly becoming popular for water sports and excellent brown trout fishing. There are numerous small lodges, motels and hotels scattered in the surrounding villages.
In addition to the water sports, the region is popular for mountain biking, hill walking, cycling and climbing. The Around Brunner cycle race is also becoming increasingly popular. The more optimistic can even try their hand at gold panning.
TRAVEL DIRECTIONS AND GETTING THERE
Road: Moana on the northern shore of Lake Brunner is about 36km from Greymouth. Take Highway 7 to Stillwater and then Arnold Valley Road south to the lake. The Lake Brunner Township is on the southern side, about 68km from Greymouth.
