Waimakariri River Valley - FURTHER INFORMATION

Waimakariri River Valley - Arthurs Pass visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Waimakariri River Valley' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from Canterbury.

The Waimakariri River is the largest river in north Canterbury on the South Island of New Zealand. The river starts in mountains near to Arthurs Pass and flows southeast for about 150km entering the Pacific Ocean just north of Christchurch and the Banks Peninsula. For much of the length the Waimakariri River is a braided river, but part way down it is forced through the narrow Waimakariri Gorge canyon before continuing across the Canterbury plains.

Bealey Spur is one a favorite day tramp / hike for those living in the region. Walkers often hike up to the Bealey spur Hut and from there are stunning views over the Waimakariri Valley and Otira Valley. The Bealey Spur trail is about 5 hours round trip over 6.5 miles ascending 585 meters to an old hut.

TRAVEL DIRECTIONS AND GETTING THERE

Highway 73 passes through the Waimakariri Valley. Bealey Spur is about 11km from Arthurs Pass and about 40km from Castle Hill
