Highway 73 transects the Southern Island of New Zealand. It runs from Christchurch in Canterbury on the east coast to the Kumara Junction on the West Coast where it joins the Highway 6 coastal road. This road is about 220km long.
On the way from the West Coast, the road travels up the Taramakau River passing through Jacksons just south of Lake Brunner. From here the road passes up the Otira Gorge and over Arthurs Pass before heading down towards the Waimakariri River Valley, past Bealey Spur and through Waimakariri Gorge there to continue across the Canterbury Plains to Christchurch.

Highway 73 passes through the Waimakariri Valley. Bealey Spur, close to this point, is about 11km from Arthurs Pass and about 40km from Castle Hill
