The Taramakau River runs west from the Southern Alps on the South Island of New Zealand to the Tasman Sea near to Camerons and Kumara Junction on the West Coast. The headwaters of the Taramakau River originate in the Southern Alps. It is fed into by the Otira River which cascades down the Otira Gorge near to Arthurs Pass.

Road: Highway 73 runs up Taramakau River Valley until the Otira River, where it heads south over Arthurs Pass.
