The Otira River begins on the slopes of Mount Rolleston in the Southern Alps of New Zealand. From there it flows under the Otira Viaduct, down the Otira Gorge and past the small settlement of Otira before joining the Taramakau River, which flows west to the Tasman Sea. Highway 73 travels up the gorge on it's way east over the mountains.

Road: Otira, at the base of Otira Gorge, is about 15km north of Arthur's Pass and 20km from Jacksons.
