Otira is set in a narrow valley on the western side of a pass over the Southern Alps in New Zealand. Highway 73 runs through this valley on the West Coast and then follows the path of the Otira River up the famous Otira Gorge, climbing up the slopes of Mount Rolleston through a National Park. Near the top of the pass the road passes over the Otira Viaduct and traverses the mountain saddle before beginning it's decent through Arthur's Pass into Canterbury.
