Whitianga is the main settlement on Mercury Bay on the Coromandel Peninsula. It is popular with tourists for water sports and big game fishing. The town is full of hotels, bars, restaurants and cafes to cater for the influx of people. The backpackers hotel at the right hand end of the beach often organizes games and activities on the beach for it's guests.
At the right hand end of Long Beach is Whitianga Quay, where a small passenger ferry takes visitors across the harbour entrance to Ferry Landing from where it is possible to explore the nearby coves, like , and the Shakespeare Reserve where Shakespeare Cliff offers panoramic views over much of Mercury Bay and Cooks Beach.
