Snežnik (pronounced 'Snezhnik') is the highest mountain in Slovenia. This is the highest non Alpine peak in the country, rising to 1796m in the southwest of Slovenia, about 30km from the Adriatic Sea and close to Ilirska Bistrica. At the base of the mountain is Snežnik village. The mountain can be seen from anywhere within Slovania as well as from parts of Croatia. Both Snežnik mountain and Rakov Škocjan valley are a nature reserve and many of the plants and animals found here are endangered. These include brown bears, wolf and lynx.
The surrounding area contains Snežnik forest, grassland valleys and wild karst landscapes with abysses and precipice walls. Under Snežnik is Glacier Cave and this, along with Mašun abyss, Kozlek and Gomanci are all popular for skiing and winter sports. Fortifications from different periods of Slovenia's history are scattered around the landscape, from Ilyric fortifications and Roman defensive walls to the remnants of the former Italian border with barracks and border posts.
There are marked trails up the mountain from various access points and it takes around 2 hours to walk to the summit, where there is a mountain hut. In the winter it is possible to ski in the region. Many people com here from the city of Ilirska Bistrica on day trips to explore the mountain and surrounding countryside. Further tourist information can also be found at Sviscaki (2 hours away). Those wising to explore Sneznik and the surroundings should visit the Sviščaki Centre for information.
