Paihia is the main tourist town on the Bay of Islands in Northland at the northern end of New Zealand. National Geographic magazine ranks the The Bay of Islands among the top 20 worldwide travel destinations. It is one of the most visited locations in New Zealand.
Paihia forms a gateway to exploring the Bay of Islands. Here numerous cruises depart around the bay, a passenger ferry transports visitors to Russell (to take a car, catch the car ferry from Opua). The main cruise operator in the area is Fullers who offer Cape Brett, Hole in the Rock and Cream Trip cruises, Dolphin Adventures and the Excitor Fast Boat. Fullers also offer coach trips to Cape Reinga.
The Bay of Islands is 33km across and contains 144 individual islands scattered around. These form dramatic backdrops to fishing and boating activities. The area is well known for big game fishing and also forms an ideal gateway to exploring further regions of Northland.
