Sandy Bay is just to the east of Cape Reinga is at the northwestern end of the Aupouri Peninsula, right at the northern end of New Zealand. This is a small and sheltered bay surrounded by steep hills. It is passed through on the popular walk from Tapotupotu Bay to Cape Reinga, which takes about 2 hours 20 minutes to complete. Cape Reinga is normally full of tourists, but this little bay is much quieter and more secluded.

Cape Reinga car park is at the end of Highway 1, about 100km north of Kaitaia. It is about 130km from Monganui on Doubtless Bay and 210km from Paihia on the Bay of Islands.
