Cape Reinga in Mist - Aupouri Peninsula visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Cape Reinga in Mist' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from Northland.
Cape Reinga is one of the must do tourist sites in New Zealand. This is one of the points at the far end of the Aupouri Peninsula in Northland vying for classification as the northern most point of New Zealand. The name comes from the Māori for 'Underworld' for whom it is known as Te Reinga or Te Rerenga Wairua. For the Maori, Cape Reinga is the darting point for spirits heading for the underworld, and parts of the cape are considered sacred.
Māori concerns have come into conflict with the regions popularity with tourists. Cape Reinga sees over 120,000 visitors a year, and up to 1300 cars a day travel the Aupouri Peninsula in the high season. The cliffs and hills near Cape Reinga are lined with paths that lead down to various bays. A popular 2.5 hour walk is from Tapotupotu Bay to Cape Reinga, which passes through Sandy Bay on the way.
